An advocate, Mohammed Azeemuddin, on Monday filed a memo in a Nampally court seeking permission to appear on behalf of MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi in a criminal case.
A petition was earlier filed by Kashimshetty Karunasagar, another advocate, against the alleged inflammatory speech of Owaisi which came up for hearing at the court of VII Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.
Azeemuddin approached the court saying that he would like to contest the case on behalf of Owaisi.
Objected to this, Karunasagar said it was not maintainable. However, Azeemuddin argued that prior to the registration of a criminal case the petitioner has spoken to the media and made the complaint public.
Hence, on the grounds of natural justice, his arguments should be heard. After listening to the arguments, the magistrate posted the matter for January 2.
The complainant had alleged that he watched a video on a website, in which Owaisi used inflammatory words against a particular community while addressing a public meeting in Nirmal town in Adilabad district on December 24.
Meanwhile, a group of civil rights activists have strongly condemned Owaisi's speech.
The group comprising Mazher Hussain, Hamid Mohammed Khan, M Mandal, Asghar Ali Engineer, Swami Agnivesh, Mahesh Bhatt, Irfan Engineer, Sandeep Panday and Ram Punyani said in a statement, "Such obnoxious speeches and statements divide society, vitiate peace and lead to conflicts and riots that eventually result in deaths and destruction causing untold hardships to the poor of all communities. Coming from a responsible member of Legislative Assembly makes it even more detestable and unacceptable."
The group has demanded that the authorities take "exemplary action in the matter to ensure that such intolerable acts are never repeated again, anywhere by anyone."
