AP govt seeks Rs 3,744 crore drought relief

Hyderabad, January 11: Andhra Pradesh government today sought a sum of Rs 3,744 crore as financial assistance from the Centre towards drought relief measures in the state.

In the backdrop of all 856 mandals in the state being declared as drought-affected this season due to scanty and deficit rainfall, Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy today reviewed the drought relief measures with Finance Minister Anam Ramanarayana Reddy, Revenue Minister N Raghuveera Reddy and higher officials. The state government prepared a detailed report on the loss suffered due to drought and the amount of funds required from the Centre for various relief measures, according to Raghuveera Reddy.

Briefing newsmen at the end of the review meeting, the Revenue Minister said the detailed report was being forwarded to the Government of India today and a Central team would visit the state to assess the damage. He said crops in 34.24 lakh hectares suffered damage due to drought for which a sum of Rs 1886 crore was needed as input subsidy. Besides, Rs 27 crore was needed for damaged horticulture crops, Rs 120 crore for rural and Rs 77.54 crore for urban drinking water supply in drought-hit mandals, the minister added.
