February 24:

Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev may soon land in legal mess for his claims to cure cancer and HIV with yoga and medicines marketed by his pharmacy.

Medical councils have now united against the likes of Baba Ramdev, who have claimed to cure diseases through television and other means.

In a meeting held in New Delhi, a resolution was passed by the state medical councils asking the Drug Controller General of India to book all those who promise to cure diseases under the Drugs and Magic Remedies. (Objectionable Advertisements) Act, 1954.

The act aims to control the advertisement of drugs in certain cases, to prohibit the advertisement for certain purposes of remedies alleged to possess magic qualities and to provide for matters connected therewith.

Speakers in the meeting pointed out that yoga guru Baba Ramdev was claiming to cure all the diseases listed in the act. The meeting highlighted the fact that the menace of quackery was on a rise and it was an offence to carry out practices without prior training in medicine.

Baba Ramdev's website has been promoting 'Yog cancer ke liye' apart from television programmes. The website also has a video uploaded, which shows Baba Ramdev talking about his ability to cure cancer through several medicines including brain tumours.

"You can consume 10 to 50 ml of this juice. Start on this if there is no improvement with chemotherapy or radiation. Consume as much as you can digest. There is no side effect of this juice. With this treatment, we have seen that blood cancer can be cured," says Baba Ramdev.

"I am telling you this because we have data and have also published results of our research," he says in the video.

The Indian Council of Medical Research had issued a warning earlier after a government servant died following consumption of excessive lauki (bitter gourd) juice.
