CPI(M) State secretary B V Raghavulu caused sensation by stating that the Indian Constitution was against the minorities. Referring to MIM MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi’s episode, he said if minorities were to protect their rights, they should depend more on themselves than the Constitution. He, however, faulted the statement of Akbaruddin provoking the Muslims and justified his arrest.
Raghavulu has questioned as to why similar action was not taken against Vishwa Hindu Parishad Chief Praveen Togadia, who also made such remarks provoking one community. He said the Bhagya Lakshmi temple abutting the Charminar had a history of 60 years. He lamented that the successive governments have been harassing the minorities all the time.
Meanwhile, TDP senior leader Payyavula Keshav charged the Congress with politicking in the name of religion. He said the ruling party was provoking both the Hindus and the Muslims. He also justified the arrest of Akbaruddin for his anti-national remarks. However, he said the actions of the government were more dangerous than the statement of Akbaruddin.
Questioning the action at this particular time, he has questioned how many cases were registered against Akbar when his party supported the Congress. He faulted the way in which the government handled the Akbar case. He claimed that only during the TDP rule, the interests of the minorities were safeguarded. He said there was no violence during the nine-year rule of Chandrababu Naidu. He also questioned why the government, which registered cases against Akbaruddin, had not registered any case against the VHP chief Praveen Togadia and arrest him.
