Former Pak coach Lawson advises ‘some time off’ for ‘jaded’ Umar Gul

Karachi, Mar 3 (ANI): Former Pakistani coach Geoff Lawson has said that fast bowler Umar Gul needed some time away from the game to get back in form following his poor performance in Pakistan’s 3-0 whitewash by South Africa in the recently concluded Test series. The former Australian pace bowler, who was the coach of the Pakistan team between July 2007 and October 2008 before getting sacked, said that although he expected Gul to perform well in South Africa, he felt that the Pakistani quick was burned out as there was a lot of pressure on him as an experienced bowler and the leader of the pace attack, Pak Passion reports. Lawson also said that as a result, Gul was looking tired out and cynical of the game as there have not been many experienced quick bowlers around him to take the load off Gul. The former Pakistan coach advised Gul to take a break from the game for a month or so to re-energise himself both mentally and physically. Disappointed by Pakistan’s performance in the Test series against the Proteas, specially the last Test, Lawson said that although the team showed some promise at times, but the lack of consistency from the bowlers while bowling at the South African lower order proved to be the team’s undoing. However, Lawson said that Dav Whatmore, the current Pakistan coach has no need to be worried as he has plenty of talent to work with, particularly the fast bowlers and a couple of young batsmen doing the business in South Africa to look forward to the next series.
