May 30:

Singapore, May 30: The story of one community in Singapore has officially become part of the cultural heritage landscape here, with the opening of the Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre yesterday.

President S R Nathan opened the centre in Telok Ayer Street, which features four interactive galleries, that highlight the contributions of Indian Muslims to society here.

Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts and Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Yaacob Ibrahim, who was also present, said it was a very important heritage centre.

"History will show that when the Indian Muslims came to Singapore, this was the location in which they landed and this was the location where they made their place here in Singapore building not only the mosque but also the shrine. It's important for us to acknowledge that they're part of the Singapore landscape," he said.

As he encouraged the community to take ownership of the project and to "preserve their heritage for the younger generation", Dr Yaacob added that it was important to continue to do the same for all the various communities here.
