New Delhi, December 20: Affected by decades of social and economic neglect, a third of Indian Muslims are suffering and struggling to survive in the Hindus-majority country, a new survey has found.
"Thriving is the highest category. This is a person who evaluates their life positively today and expects it to be positive in five years," Dalia Mogahed, a director and senior analyst at Abu Dhabi Gallup Centre, told Emirati newspaper The National.
"Suffering is the lowest and represents someone who rates their current and future life poorly."
A Gallup survey found that a third of Indian Muslims were suffering in the Hindus-majority country.
The poll showed that Muslim Indians were "disproportionately more likely to be poor, uneducated and live in difficult conditions, it is difficult to say for sure what explains this discrepancy", said Mogahed.
Forty-seven percent of respondents said that it was difficult to survive on their incomes, compared with 39 percent of Hindus.
"We lost the upper-middle class," Zikrur Rahman, the director of the India Arab Cultural Centre at Jamia Milia Islamia, said.
"These are people who would have been philanthropists, who would have run NGOs, or sponsored scholarships. They left a great void. Had there been no migration or partition, this would not have happened."
The poll, which covered 9,500 respondents including 1,197 Muslims, also found that Muslims had larger families, with 29% having three or more children, compared with 17% of Hindus and only 7% in other religious groups.
There are some 140 million Muslims in Hindu-majority India and they have long complained of being discriminated against in all walks of life.
Muslims complain of decades of social and economic neglect and oppression.
Official figures reveal Muslims log lower educational levels and higher unemployment rates than the Hindu majority and other minorities like Christians and Sikhs.
They account for less than seven percent of public service employees, only five percent of railways workers, around four percent of banking employees and there are only 29,000 Muslims in India's 1.3 million-strong military.
Discrimination
The survey related several anecdotal instances of discrimination against Indian Muslims.
"Muslim identity affects everyday living in a variety of ways that ranges from being unable to rent/buy a house to accessing good schools for their children," the survey cited a 2006 government study by the Sachar Commission, led by former Delhi High Court chief justice Rajindar Sacher as saying.
The Sachar report also addressed the effect of the deteriorating living conditions on education as "an area of grave concern for the Muslim community".
It cited an example of Muslim children, who dropped out of school to help support their family.
Taimoor Khan, 22, left school at 17 to help his family survive.
Currently, he works at a street food stall in Delhi's predominantly Muslim Old City, after arriving in the capital five years ago from Uttar Pradesh state.
"We did not have the money to keep me in school," said Khan.
"With no income, I was forced to find work."
Being on the bottom of the government’s line of professions, Khan doubts that education would have improved his lot.
"I don't know what difference it would have made," he said.
A similar opinion is shared by many Muslims.
"Muslims do not see education as necessarily translating into formal employment," said the Sachar report.
"The low representation of Muslims in public or private sector employment and the perception of discrimination in securing salaried jobs make them attach less importance to formal 'secular' education."

R We United?
Dear all,
We are responsible for our current situations, and these are the facts of our today’s conditions and irrugularities:
1-Maintain/Creat unity among us.
2- Avoid selecting incompetent persons to be our leader and to represent us? How can an unqualified and selfish person can raise community problems demands our requirements??
3- Should build/strengthen our trust with majority people and maintain brotherhood and shouldn’t follow undemocratic leaders/parties as they are trying and will keep trying with all their possible ways to create communal feelings because their sole intention is to gain votes and generate their bank-balances abroad.
Remedies:
Be a responsible and understand the power of your vote, use it with paying special attention and be a responsible voter don’t just be a puppet.
2-Understand your responsibility and duties towards your country and towards your people. Please be careful while selecting your leader because he has to think about the development and progress of people. Do not select those person to be your leader if he is a selfish and thinking about him only.
If the above is not considerd then the worst situation may face (God guide/shouw us the rightious path and protect us).

Unity towards Upliftment is the Only Practical Solution
Lets just analyse how the even smaller groups with equal biase from the Majority community is 'Thriving' or say excelling in Social-Economic Sector. Have you seen any Sikh begging or a Christian void of Visas or Educational prospects? Then why is it only Muslims, How long will we bark on our piggy leaders who donot care except bout themselves? Therefore, People in every sector, within whatever capacity should now support a Muslim brother or many to join their sector/company/organization/business instead of just placing some alms on their hands or telling them "MAAF KARO" !

Indian Muslims plight
It is sad to read such stories about the plight of Indian
Muslims. Before the partition, Muslims and Hindus were in
the same boat. The British were ruling the country by divide
and rule policy. Whenever the two ethnic groups would unite
there will be some kind of mischief done to divide them.
Some time, a pig head in the mosque and a cow head in the
temple would be found and to incite both groups to fight with
each other. After partition, those Muslims who migrated
to Pakistan (West and East) faced a great deal of prejudice
among local people. They are still ridiculed and killed
without mercy. In Bengal which was east Pakistan before
the Indian Muslims mostly from Behar were and still are
in miserable condition. While in Karachi, Pakistan where
most of the Indian Muslims and their children live are
subjected to target killing. The only solution to this
problem is to reunite all three countries, India, Pakistan
and Bengla Desh and form a democratic federation on the
pattern of US. It is difficult but it is workable. Unity
is strength. Give it a thought, please. Muchas gracis!
An Appel to Mr. SRK - from Hyd. AP
N APPEAL TO MR. SHAHRUKH KHAN - Superstar of Bollywood & Badshah of Hindi Films.
Sir : Being an enlightened man, I am sure you have read the Sachar Report. If you have not., i request you to. Or atleast its synopsis. (It is 450 pages long - and i guess you do not have the time to go thru all of it). The report identifies 80 most backward districts of India.
I request you to sell the IPL for 800 crores - and invest this money - in the field of Education. Do NOT feel apologetic about it. Indian Muslims are the poorest and the weakest. You should not feel shy or apologetic helping them. Do not fear the "BACKLASH". Did Lata Mangeshkar not open the hopsital in Pune (and not in Malegaon). So its okay. To each one his own.
SRK : Sell the IPL team and put that money into opening quality High Schools for Indian Muslims. Operate them on a no-loss, no-profit basis. This is the best investment you can make... both for posterity and for prosperity. Your kids will inherit these schools., and dammit... they will grow.
SRK : For you, both the titles "Superstar" and "Badshah" are limiting. I want you to be the Badshah of Indian Muslim Education. All your films will be forgotten 20 yrs from now., but if you go for institution building., your schools will serve as your LEGACY. Think about it... and sorry... if I intruded your space.
High School Education ka Badshah : SRK. That is what I wish/want/desire/hope for from SRK. APNI COMMUNITY KI SEVA KARO., AND DO IT WITH CONFIDENCE. DO NT WORRY FOR CRITICISM OR HINDU-BACKLASH. They are a bunch of Bajrangi Monkeys. DO SOMETHING FOR THE INDIAN MUSLIMS, SHAHRUKH., OTHER THAN RA.ONE., DON., AND IPL.
Otherwise you would be an "opportunity lost" as far as your community is concerned. Think about it., when you are alone. Get out of the I-me-myself mode (i, gauri, aryan, suhana, my films, money, karan johar, red chillies). There is a world BEYOND all of these. You are an educated man. You must be aware that men are mortals, that films have short spans., public memory(ies) span is even shorter. And how important is INSTITUTION BUILDING for the health of a community... and you also know the real condition of Indian Muslims on the ground... in the jhopad-pattis., and bastis.
But you will not do anything about it. You are too busy with Gauri, your kids, your black clothes and your socks!
THAT is the difference between you and Lata Mangeshkar, Shahrukh. That is the difference. Sorry, but it is true. Rich Muslims try to join with the hindus (chadte suraj ko salaam)., and really have no heart to help poor muslims.
Help the muslim community come up
Such reports really hurts muslim hearts, even then the so called muslim leaders whome muslim have given a stromy voting and raised them to power seldom view there present conditions. They are only bothered about there own well beings and betterment of their future. Why not fight for the muslims absoption into public and private sectors for there survival. Those running educational institutions grant a certain percentage or meritorius poor muslim a free educations. Uplift them and support them. Its a long journey but a step towards it will definetly reward high in longer run.... Help muslims dear politicians, leaders, rich class- Its a pledge from a muslim brother..
The poor literacy amongst
The poor literacy amongst Muslims is a major cause of the poor pace of development. Family planning & emphasis on education has to be encouraged. It is necessary to change with the times and see the writing on the wall.Politicians desire the community to remain backward as only then they can be manipulated to vote as per their desire.
