Introduce English in Madrasas: Muslim scholars

Madrasas should modernize and introduce English and other advance subjects in their teachings to keep pace with the modern world, prominent Muslim scholars said in Jaipur.

They termed English as a window to the world and laid emphasis on learning the language for career growth.

On the first day of ten-day residential workshop for the Madrasa teachers from across the country, the speakers called for modernization of education.

They said it was important for bringing the students to the mainstream and enabling them to compete for their career.

The workshop is the first of its kind being organised in Rajasthan after the completion of a series in other major cities of the country.

It forms part of the professional development programme on teaching English language skills for Madrasa teachers, which is being supported by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) - US Embassy, New Delhi.

The Marwar Muslim Education and Welfare Society (MMWES) and Taraqqi-I Foundation are jointly organising the workshop here.

"One of the main objectives of the series of workshops is to ensure professional development of English teachers and enable them to pass on the knowledge and information to the target groups in an effective manner," Raashid Nehal, Associate Professor, Aligarh Muslim University, said.

He said that the trainees will be able to guide and support their fellow teachers and act as a great educational resource for their madrasas.

The workshop was inaugurated in the presence of Rajasthan Health Minister A A Khan, Rajasthan Madrasa Board Chairman Maulana Fazle Haq and Rajasthan Waqf Board Chairman Liaqat Ali Khan.

Twenty-five teachers selected from various states including Jammu and Kashmir, Kerala, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, Chennai and Kolkata are participating in the workshop.

Connie Greenleaf, Senior Fellow- RELO was among others present on the first day of the event.

English and Urdu both are necessary for Muslims

English as a foreign language has to be learnt by everyone since the world has become a small global village. The research and development in science and technology is done English. To benefit from the scientific and technological advancements which are career-driven, English has to be learnt for advancement. Also English serves as a tool for interaction with global citizens which can help ulemas translate the rich Islamic literature in English to pass on the benefits to non-urdu speaking people of the world. At the same time those who are learning only English should not abandon Urdu, as Urdu as vast literature for Muslims to benefit and develop good character. Those who focus only on English and neglect Urdu are succumbed to other cultures as they distant themselves from reading Urdu literature or interacting with urdu-speaking scholars.

If English is taught in madrassas, Muslims will escape from the clutches of the mullahs. So do not teach English in madrassas. In fact Muslims must never hear or read English so that they can remain pure and purest.

The above mentioned people have made immense progress with the knowledge of their native language.
English is an advantage but a good knowledge of Urdu is necessary.
Where are the good English teachers for Madrasas.
Are madrasas ready to take Christians/Hindus as teachers for madrasas at market rate salaries.
First get teachers and then make a statement.
I am sure even after 20 years,the condition of madrasas will only remain the same.

I thing this is very good and step taken by ulma inshallah allaha will help in this matter to make the student with gud and modern education.Equal right this student also have to get this education

This is a very good move, the teaching will support them in day to day life. Which also inturn bring a confidance to the children to face the world and deal with people from different countries.

English

English language should have been embraced long time back. I don't understand the mindset regarding this attitude. Efficiency in English could have been quite beneficial in the Dawa work that is to convey the message of Islam.
Not to mention the benifits that can be achieved in career growth.

Sir Syed was termed as Kafir for using English as medium of instruction way back in the early 20th century! since then this subject of learning English language is haunting Muslims which is highly deplorable. Wake up before u become a dinosaur.

I think it wouldn't be correct to say that the subject of learning English language is haunting (Indian) Muslims since the days of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. You will be surprised to know that (as mentioned in the book "Muslims in Indian Cities - Trajectories of Marginalisation" edited by Laurent Gayer & Christophe Jaffrelot, Columbia University Press) "Historically Muslims were often the first to pursue modern education. Between 1881 and 1901, Muslim males gradually bridged the gap with their Hindu counterparts, before getting ahead - a trend that persisted at least until 1931 (the last year for which census figures disaggregated on the basis of religion are available). Moreover, for the whole period of 1891-1931, Muslims were well ahead of Hindus in terms of English literacy and it is therefore doubtful that 'Muslims found the process of adjustment to Western education particularly hard'".

I think you should read the book to get some grasp of the state of education, marginalisation of present day Muslims in India.
