Murray thanks ‘supporting’ girlfriend for first title win since Wimbledon 2013

British number one Andy Murray has said that he got through a very tough week to win the Shenzhen Open title thanks to the support of his girlfriend Kim Sears .

Murray beat Spain’s Tommy Robredo 5-7, 7-6 (11-9), 6-1 for his first tournament victory since Wimbledon 2013. The Scot had faced criticism over his backing for the Scottish independence ‘yes’ campaign.

Murray said that he wants to thank his team and his friends and family back home and especially his girlfriend. He also said that Sears has supported him a lot through this week, adding that it has been a very tough week for him, The BBC reported.

Murray lost the first set in China and fought back to save five match points in the second-set tiebreak before racing through the decider as Robredo struggled physically.

An emotional Murray said that it has been a long time since he won a tournament, addin that it was an emotional week for him. He said that he managed to fight his way through it, win the title, and hopefully he can win another one before the end of the year.

The Scot said that it was obviously an incredibly tough match, adding that the conditions were so hard to play in. he said that he got lucky, basically, at the end of the second set, fought hard, tried his best and thankfully managed to turn it round.

Murray said that Robredo had a great tournament, adding that the Spaniard probably deserved to win the match. He said that Robredo had the opportunities in the second set, but sometimes that happens in sport, adding that he just tried to fight till the end.
