Nani’s vitriol against TRS chief backfires

Hyderabad, February 09: The controversy over NTR Jr-starrer Adurs refuses to die down. The film producer and TDP MLA Kodali Nani’s foot in the mouth remarks on the ‘‘success’’ of his flick in Telangana and against Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K Chandrasekhara Rao and his family led to disruption of the screening of the film and finally, a boycott call from the Telangana joint action committee on Monday.

The film industry distanced itself from Nani’s remarks and clarified that it had nothing to do with the latest controversy. It also made clear its intention to take some sort of action against the defiant producer. However, the ruckus may end up hitting distributors and exhibitors in Telangana, not Nani.

Exhibitors and theatre owners in the region said, ‘‘Nani has nothing to lose as he has collected his money. If the screening is stopped, it is the distributors and buyers in the region who will stand to lose.’’ TRS leader Harish Rao, who demanded an unconditional apology from Nani, alleged that the TDP MLA was raking up a controversy to claim insurance as the film had bombed at the box-office.

Last month, when 72 prints of Adurs were released in Telangana, the Telangana Jagruthi, TRS’ cultural wing, gave a boycott call on the ground that film producers, Nani and V Vamsi, and even NTR Junior were opposed to the T movement. Following a clarification from NTR Junior and appeals from the industry, the call was withdrawn. On Sunday, Nani, a united State advocate, claimed the film had been a runaway success despite TRS chief and his family whom he likened to dogs that bark but do not bite.

Producers’ Council president D Suresh Babu, Movie Artistes’ Association president Murali Mohan and producer- director T Bharadwaj condemned Nani’s unsavoury remarks.

‘‘Nani’s remarks are not indicative of the industry’s stand,” they said.
