Northeastern states promote tourism and crafts at IITF-2014

A large number of craftsmen and entrepreneurs from the Northeast participated in the recently concluded 34th India International Trade Fair 2014 (IITF) in New Delhi.

Tourism and industrial promotion was the focus of Assam pavilion at the Trade Fair. The Assam Pavilion, with the theme ‘Women Entrepreneurship’ showcased various entrepreneurial activities of the women of Assam and highlighted the contributions of those who have made a special mark in their respective fields.

The various products put up on display at the Fair were Assam Tea, handloom products, Assamese jewellery, bamboo and cane products and ethnic foot items, most of which are led by women entrepreneurs.

“It’s very good. We have different kinds of traditional dresses and products but many people do not know about it. So, people get to know more about our products. It also gives us a platform to showcase our products. We also interacted with the customers,” said Benita, who is an exhibitor from Assam .

The crafts persons and entrepreneurs from other Northeastern states like Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya also participated in the fair.

Around 20 exhibitors from Nagaland showcased a variety of products like handloom, traditional jewellery, artificial flowers, cultural artifact and decorative items.

An entrepreneur from Nagaland Toni Achumi, who exhibited her handicrafts for the second time, was thrilled by the response.

“People appreciate our products, people who use our products come again and buy it. Some of them don’t know or they are not aware about the products but overall it’s good that this year response is very good,” said Achumi.

A large number of visitors also thronged the Tripura pavilion for its cane, bamboo and handloom products.

The India International Trade Fair provides a platform to entrepreneurs and crafts persons from the Northeast to develop business to business contacts.
