Manila, March 17: The Philippines has banned the deployment of newly hired workers to Bahrain as the kingdom intensifies a crackdown on protesters.
Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz says the ban will not cover Filipinos already employed in the Middle Eastern kingdom who submit an affidavit that they know the risks of returning there.
Officials have urged some 31,000 Filipino workers to leave Bahrain amid clashes between security forces and protesters demanding an end to Bahrain's 200-year-old monarchy.
The Philippines has been evacuating thousands of its nationals from countries in the Middle East and North Africa wracked by violent uprisings. Some 9 million Filipino workers abroad send home billions of dollars that boost the economy.
