Ponting’s dad delighted to have son back after 17 years

Sydney, December 15:

For 17 years, Graham and Lorraine have shared their eldest boy, Ricky Ponting, with the rest of Australia and international cricket, but now they are delighted to welcome their son back in the family after the former captain retired from the game.

Friday’s lap of honour in front of his home crowd just a week after announcing his retirement signified the end of Ponting as public property.

Graham, a 61-year-old groundskeeper from the Launceston working class suburb of Mowbray, said there had been many a tear spilt during Ricky''s final Test in Perth but Friday was a happy day.

“I thought Rick would play forever - 17 years and I get a bit emotional but he''s done a fantastic job, made us all very proud. It has been a long journey, a lot of uphills and a lot of downhills and we''ve taken them and so has he and he''s come out on top,” News.com.au quoted Graham, as saying.

Ponting was joined on the back of the car yesterday by daughter Emmy, four, and one-year-old Matisse.

Graham said it had not always been a smooth ride for the family.

“It is going to make a lot easier for all of us. We''ve been through tough times and a few instances which Rick has been involved in and it got to the stage where we had to get a private number because we were getting abusive phone calls,” Graham said.

“So all that''s finished and I''ll be able to read the paper again properly because I didn''t like bad things about Rick so maybe there might be some good stuff in the paper from here on in,” he added. (ANI)
