Sri Lankan court extends remand of 38 Indian fishermen till December 31

A Sri Lankan court has extened the remand of 38 Tamil Nadu fishermen to December 31.

They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy a few months ago.

The Oorkavalthurai Magistrate extended the remand, according to the president of the Rameswaram Fishermen Organization.

The fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on different occasions for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and entering into Sri Lankan waters for poaching near Katchatheevu Island, reports the Lanka Page.

The fishermen, hailing from Rameswaram, Pudukkottai and Nagapattinam were arrested by Sri Lankan naval personnel in September, October and November and later lodged in a prison in Jaffna.

At present, there are 38 Indian fishermen and 82 Indian trawlers in Sri Lankan custody.
