March 07:

New Delhi, March 07: The Yamuna river is severely polluted near Nizamuddin Bridge in Delhi, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) said Saturday.

“The stretch of the river Yamuna between Nizamuddin Bridge (Delhi) and Etawah (Uttar Pradesh) exceeds the standard in terms of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of three miligram per litre due to the discharge of sewage and industrial effluents and large scale extraction of water for drinking purposes,” the CPCB said.

The level of dissolved oxygen at Nizamuddin Bridge and Palwal (Haryana) is reported to be less than three miligram per litre.

“Yamuna is severally polluted between Nizamuddin Bridge and Etawah,” the central environment ministry said quoting the CPCB report.

The ministry also said that implementation of river pollution abatement works is an ongoing and collective effort of the central and state governments.
