16-year-old boy, two others arrested for alleged rape

Kanchipuram: Three persons, including a 16-year-old boy, have been arrested for allegedly raping a young woman herding her cattle in a nearby village, police said today.

The trio has been sent to judicial custody, they said.

The dates of occurrence of the crime and that of a formal complaint by the victim was not immediately known.

The 21-year-old woman alleged that she was blindfolded by the three, taken to a secluded spot and raped.

The victim later reached her village and lodged a complaint with police, who arrested them.

“One [person] was sixteen-year-old and the other two were 25 and 31 years old,” a police official of Melmaruvathur All Women Police Station told PTI.

They were arrested under various sections of the law and a court here sent them to judicial custody.

While the adults were lodged in Chennai Puzhal Central Prison, the juvenile was sent to Kellys (Chennai) Government Observation Home.

“A medical report is awaited and we cannot disclose further details now,” she said.

As per the Juvenile Bill passed by Parliament today, those aged 16 years and above will now be tried under laws for adults for heinous crimes.

The Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Bill, which provides for lowering the age for trial from 18 years, was passed by Rajya Sabha with a voice vote after a walkout by Left parties which wanted it to be sent to a Select Committee. The bill was passed by Lok Sabha earlier.
