2 arrested for dealing in stolen cars

New Delhi: Two persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in purchase and sale of stolen four-wheelers after tampering their chassis and engine numbers.

Based on a tip-off, a trap was laid and the duo were arrested from near Karnal Bypass earlier this month, said Praveen Ranjan, joint commissioner of police (crime).

Twenty luxury cars have been recovered from them.

“The duo used to purchase and ensure delivery outside the national capital of cars stolen from Delhi after tampering their chassis and engine numbers and swapping registration numbers of such cars with those of damaged cars,” said Ranjan.

Police claimed the accused had told them that through their contacts in Amritsar in Punjab they used to procure documents of vehicles damaged fully in accidents.

“Later the information would be passed on to an aide who would steal similar vehicle and delivered it to them,” said the officer.

“After completing all the formalities, the car would be sold in open market for a lucrative price. Through this modus operandi the accused had sold over 100 stolen vehicles during the last one year,” the officer said.
