2 arrested for duping woman of Rs 2.8 lakh

New Delhi: Two persons who duped a woman of Rs 2.8 lakh, impersonating as Customs officials, have been arrested from south Delhi, police said today.

The duo — Premnath Sharma and Akbar Alam — were arrested from Nehru place yesterday, said Nupur Prasad, Additional DCP (south).

A complaint was filed by the woman at Hauz Khas area stating that she had been cheated by some persons on whose instructions she had deposited Rs 2.80 lakh in a bank account in June last, she said.

The woman complained that she befriended online a man, Eric Hasson from Chicago, who promised to marry her after coming to Delhi and said that he was sending her gifts including wedding ring, laptop, purse, gold set and a cheque of 4,00,000 dollars to buy a house.

Following this, she received a phone call from a person who claimed to be a Customs officer from Chhatarpati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai demanding Rs 60,000 for clearing her gift parcel.

She transferred the money online and later Rs 2.20 lakh more and got alarmed when demand of more money came in.

Efforts were on to arrest the aides of the duo, the officer said.
