5 arrested for carrying arms illegally

Varanasi: Five persons were arrested on charges of illegally carrying arms and ammunition in Cholapur area here, police said today.

During a vehicle checking drive last night, police stopped a Scorpio car in which five men were found carrying arms and ammunition with them. They had licences of some arms and ammunition but were carrying others without the same, a statement issued here by the SSP office said.

Four .315 bore factory made rifles, one .32 bore pistol, two .12 bore factory made guns, 30 cartridges of.315 bore, 13 cartridges of .12 bore, 4 cartridges of.32 bore along with their Scorpio car were seized, it said.

They have been identified as Ritesh Singh, native of Azamgarh, Ankit Kumar Singh, native of Varanasi, Umesh Kumar Singh and Hareram Pandey, both native of Ballia, and Nandlal Singh, native of Ghazipur, the statement added.

During interrogation, the accused said they were “gunner of a politician of Azamgarh and were going to deposit their licensed arms in Varanasi and had forgotten the license of their other arms at home, it said.
