5 killed as car washed away in Chhattisgarh

Raipur: Five persons including three women were killed when the car they were travelling in was washed away while crossing a flooded culvert across Maini river in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, police said today.

Bodies of Nandkuvar Sidar, 45, Parmeshwar, 22, Rajendra Porte, 27, Rajani Sai, 17, and Usha Sai, 10, were recovered today, Jashpur Superintendent of Police Girijashankar Jaiswal told PTI.

A 38-year-old person Rai Moni is missing, he said.

Jaiswal said the locals had asked the driver not to cross the culvert but he did not pay heed to their advice. The accident spot is about 400 km away from the state capital.

The incident took place around 3 PM yesterday when the SUV carrying 13 people was heading for Kailashgufa in the district.

It was carrying 12 members of a family, including four women and a girl, who were going to Kailashgufa from Baturbahar to immerse in water ashes of a relative who had died recently.

Seven of them including the driver managed to get out of the vehicle before it was washed away.

While crossing the culvert between Durgapara and Kailashgufa on Maini river which was in spate, water level suddenly rose.
