6 held for distributing liquor to voters ahead panchayat polls

Ghaziabad: Cracking whip on bootleggers, Bhojpur police arrested six persons for allegedly distributing liquor to lure the voters ahead of last phase of panchayat polls to be conducted on October 29th in Uttar Pradesh, police said today.

Following a tip-off, police reached village Kanakpur around 9 pm last night and arrested – Lakhan, Sohanvir, Ajab Singh, Neetoo, Praveen and Amit – while they were distributing liquor to the voters, Bhojpur SHO Sahvez Khan said.

All six persons accused of electoral offences have been booked under sections 171 and 188 of IPC and section 60 of Excise Act and sent to jail, he said.

52 Haryana-made quarter bottles and two SUVs have been taken into custody by police from the spot.

In a separate incident, Sahibabad police seized 275 cartons of Haryana-made liquor last night during a road checking at Mohan Nagar intersection.

Two smugglers – Ram Kumar and Avdhesh – have been arrested and the mini truck used for allegedly ferrying the liquor has been impounded, police said today.

During interrogation, the duo confessed that liquor was meant for distribution in elections, SHO Hari Dayal Singh Yadav said.

SHO Tronica city Sheelesh Yadav told that two smugglers Chetan and Manoj were nabbed from Chaman Vihar colony trisection when they were allegedly carrying 150 liquor quarter bottles on a motorcycle.

Their vehicle has been impounded and the duo has been sent to jail, Yadav said.
