A seven-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her 45-year-old neighbour in Baljit Nagar area of central Delhi who has been arrested, police said today.
The girl was admitted to Lady Hardinge hospital where she was undergoing treatment. The accused Ram Chander Mahto who was a neighbour of the victim has been arrested, said a senior police officer.
The incident occurred around 7 pm last evening when the girl was playing outside her house at Baljit Nagar in Patel Nagar area and was picked up by the accused, he said.
A case under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO Act has been registered in the matter at Patel Nagar police station.
Police said that the accused was living alone in his house as his wife had gone to his native place. He lured the girl and brought her inside his room where he sexually assaulted her at which she cried and fainted.
The locals alarmed by the cries of the girl reached the place of accused but he had managed to escape. Later, police was called who rushed the girl to hospital.
The victim is a student of class II at a government school in the neighbourhood, police said.
