Accused juvenile should be put in jail: Nirbhaya’s parents

New Delhi: Expressing disappointment over reports that the juvenile accused in the 2012 brutal gang-rape case would be kept under monitoring of an NGO for a year, Nirbhaya’s parents on Thursday urged the government to ensure that the former is put behind the bars.

“It doesn’t matter to us whether he is put in an NGO or not. What we know is that the juvenile has been released, whether he is an NGO or somewhere else. What matters is that he is out of jail,” Nirbhaya’s mother told ANI.

“We will always be dissatisfied over the fact that the person involved in the brutal killing of our daughter is roaming free. Our daughter will not get justice unless and until the four convicts are hanged and the juvenile convict is put behind the bars, “she added.

According to sources, the accused juvenile, who was supposed to be released on December 15, would not be released from jail as of now.

Union Woman and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi had said earlier this week that she had written to the Union Home Ministry demanding that sex offenders be tracked after release.

Earlier, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had issued a notice to Centre and Delhi Government on complaint apprehending threat to society from the juvenile post his release.

The NHRC had taken cognizance of a complaint received from Nirbhaya’s parents.

The convict, who was below 18 years at the time of the horrific crime, was sentenced to three years in a reform home.

The punishment was seen by many as disproportionate to the enormity of the crime and spurred demands for changes in the law so that the teenagers involved in serious crimes can be tried as adults.

Four other convicts have been sentenced to death and a fifth was found dead in prison.(ANI)
