Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lieutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung for failing to provide adequate safety and security in the city. The Delhi Police, that looks after law and order in the city, comes under the Home Ministry.
“Repeated rape of minors is shameful and worrying. Delhi police has completely failed to provide safety. What are PM n his LG doing?,” said Kejriwal on Twitter.
The AAP leader added that PM Modi should either act of transfer the control over the police to the state government.
Reports say that a two-and-a-half year old girl was kidnapped from a Ram Lila programme in the Nangloi area and later gangraped. Another five year old girl was allegedly gangraped in Delhi’s Anand Vihar area and has been admitted to the hospital.
The two-and-a-half-year-old girl was kidnapped and allegedly gangraped by two bike-borne men who picked her up last night from outside her home in Nihal Vihar area of south west Delhi.
The girl was later found by the locals in a park and was profusely bleeding. She was rushed to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where she is undergoing treatment, police said.
A case has been registered under relevant Sections of IPC and POCSO Act and a manhaunt has been launched to arrest the accused, said a senior police officer.
“It’s a really sad state of affairs that little girls are being subjected to such crimes. We will do whatever is necessary,” Kejriwal told reporters later.
Delhi, which was at the centre of the Nirbhaya gang rape case in 2012, has often been called the ‘rape capital of India’. After being sworn to power post a landslide election earlier this year, Kejriwal’s government has promised safety and security of women in the city. But it has also demanded that the control of the Delhi police be handed over to the state government from the Home Ministry.
Over the past several months, the AAP government in Delhi has alleged that the Centre is trying to interfere in the affairs of the state government through the L-G’s office. The Centre, on its part, has rejected those allegations.
