AP Cong chief faces farmers’ wrath

Machilipatnam: Police lathi-charged villagers in Kona of Krishna district today after they tried to attack Andhra Pradesh Congress president N. Raghuveera Reddy.

The incident occurred as soon as Reddy and other members of the Congress’ team entered the village to gauge mood of farmers who are opposing acquisition of their land for Machilipatnam deep water port project and other ancillary industries.

The farmers hurled mud on Reddy and others, following which police resorted to mild lathi-charge to disperse farmers, deputy SP D S Sravanakumar told PTI.

However, Reddy blamed TDP workers for the incident.

The TDP government is looking to acquire a total of 14,500 acres of private land from farmers and fishermen to build Machilipatnam port and industrial corridor.
