Due to personal intervention of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in strengthening the power sector and overall pro-active role of the State government, the AP power utilities occupied No 1 position in the country within a short span of over one-and-a-half year by successfully saving around Rs 1950 crores (1% of reduction of Transmission and Distribution losses) is almost equal to savings of around Rs 300 crore. The huge financial savings achieved through the implementation of an action plan of the Govt. paved the way for reduction of Transmission & Distribution losses from 17.05% in 2010-11 to 10.54% (i.e. reduction of 6.51%) by August 2015.
Impressed with the best performance of AP power sector in terms of reduction of T&D losses by strengthening the infrastructure, the Union Govt. suggested the APTRANSCO in a recent meeting of Secretaries at New Delhi to submit a comprehensive report on the issue which will be circulated to other major states. Enthused with these developments and as per the direction of the CM, the power utilities have developed a Road Map for further reducing the T&D loses from 10.54% to single digit by 2016-17 on par with the advanced countries like US, UK South Korea, France etc.
Chairman & Managing Director/APTRANSCO and MD/APGENCO K Vijayanand, who reviewed along with K. Ranganatham, Advisor, Energy, R. Mutyala Raju, CMD/APEPDCL & H.Y. Dora, CMD/APSPDCL on the Road Map and power supply position in general, has stated that to achieve this gigantic task including Rural Electrification, the power utilities have contemplated to invest around Rs 27,000 Crs in the coming years. These pro-consumer initiatives will yield on excellent results in further providing highly qualitative power supply to the people. The Govt. has also directed the APTRANSCO to go for 400 KV substations in each & every district apart from constructing 72 Nos. 132 KV, 34 Nos. 220 KV & 1038 Nos. 33/11 KV substations and lines in the next 4 to 5 years.
Consequent to the request of the AP Govt and recommendations of the Centre, the World Bank has agreed to sanction around 400 million dollars (Rs 2400 crores) in the first phase for strengthening the power sector. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) also sanctioned around Rs 295 crore for the implementation of High Voltage Distribution System (HVDS) project for the reducing the distribution losses and providing qualitative power supply to the farm sector. He also stated that AP power utilities will continue to strive to reach the objective of the Govt. in making the power sector, a self-reliant and self-sufficient and re-dedicate the welfare of the consumers in particular. K Ranganatham Committee Report on infrastructure development of power sector with regard to DDUGJY, IPDS & HVDS and so on will be submitted to Ajay Jain, Secretary(Energy, I&I, CRDA) by October 15.
