Army finds Mumbai trekker’s body in Himachal

A team of the Indian Army on Sunday recovered the body of Richard Joseph Kher, a trekker from Mumbai, who fell from a cliff in Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh.

An official release from the army said Kher had gone to trek in the area along with his friend and fell down a cliff, about 30 km ahead of Khanjar, the last inhabited village in Miyar Valley.

The state government approached the army for a rescue mission on Friday and a team was formed by the army’s Western Command.

“The army’s rescue team comprising two officers, two junior commissioned officers and eight jawans from the High Altitude Warfare School in Sonmarg and the Yol-based Rising Star Corps was launched in army aviation helicopters,” the release said.

The team carried out a search of the area and managed to recover the trekker’s body on Sunday, despite inclement weather and virtual inaccessibility of the terrain.
