Arrest Appa Rao and release HCU students, demands Uttam

Hyderabad: Holding the State Government responsible for the sequence of events at University of Hyderabad and Osmania University during past few days, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Wednesday condemned the arrest of students and demanded their immediate release.

He alleged that police had illegally detained the students of UoH who protested on the campus a day ago during the press conference of vice chancellor P Appa Rao.

Addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan he said that reinstating the vice chancellor Appa Rao was the actual reason for the violence on the campus. He questioned the government as to how it could reinstate a person who was not only responsible for the death of a Dalit PHD scholar but also resulted in widespread protests across the country against the violation of human rights. Instead of taking action against the Vice-Chancellor under SC/ST Atrocities charges, government has reinstated him even as the student groups and students are still protesting against the feudal behavior of the university authorities, he said.

Uttam Kumar Reddy’s said that Appa Rao’s return as a VC was a clear insult to the self respect of the Dalits across the country. He informed that the students who were detained by the police on Tuesday were not shown as arrested and their mobiles were snatched by the police officials besides not informing anything about their arrest to their parents.

On this occasion he condemned the select attacks on students and Congress sympathizers on the Osmania University on Wednesday. He said that the State Government was targeting the people and students who could raise their rational voice against the government policies towards youth and employment issues.

Uttam said that his party would fight and struggle in support of students and would approach Human Rights Commission at an appropriate time in this regard.

It is to be reminded that student groups clashed on the OU campus after an unidentified body was found and was claimed to be of a student belonging to C hostel of the hostel by few students. Others opposed it and clashed with the latter, in which several student leaders were injured.

Congress MLA S.A. Sampath Kumar, who was injured in the violence, said that he was selectively targeted by the police. He alleged that TRS government wanted to suppress the democratic voice of the students, in pursuit of employment in the state, in order to hamper the chances of OU becoming hot bed for another student movement like that of Telangana movement.

PCC Spokesperson Vijay, who is doing a PHD from OU, was seriously injured in the attack. Showing the marks of injuries to the media persons, he alleged that he was targeted only because of his affiliation with the Congress party.

TPCC Working President Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, MLAs T. Rammohan Reddy and Vamshi Chandra Reddy, NSUI National President Rosy John and Telangana Youth Congress president Anil Kumar Yadav were also present in the press conference. (INN)
