Britain to test driverless cars in 2017

London: In a bid to bring self-driving cars to the streets by 2020, Britain has announced to begin trials on driverless cars for the first time in 2017.

Finance Minister George Osborne will announce the plans on Wednesday to test vehicles on motorways.

“Naturally we need to ensure safety, and that’s what the trials we are introducing will test. If successful, we could see driverless cars available for sale and on Britain’s roads, boosting UK jobs and productivity,” Reuters quoted Osborne as saying in a statement.

The market for autonomous driving is worth 900 billion pounds (USD 1.29 trillion) worldwide, according to the government.

Google’s self-driving car was last month approved by the US vehicle safety regulators, which stated that the computer could be considered the driver under federal law.

However, the top U.S. safety agency said that there were still significant legal hurdles to be cleared before self-driving cars could be sold in the United States.
