Child marriage stopped in Haryana’s Jind

New Delhi: A child marriage was stopped on Wednesday by the child marriage prohibition department and police in Sangatpura village here, an official said.

While the groom is 22-years-old, the bride was found to be 15-years-old studying in class X, the official said.

Acting on a tip-off, the child marriage prohibition department stopped the wedding procession in Sangatpura while it was preparing to go to Dhani Goalpur village in Fatehabad.

After counselling by the officials, the parents of the groom gave a written undertaking that they will follow the law and allow their son to marry the girl before she reaches legal marriageable age, police said.

Under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, marriage of a boy below 21 years of age and a girl below 18 is an offence and attracts a 2-year imprisonment or Rs one lakh fine, or both.
