Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh), Nov. 11 : Residents of Gorakhpur are thronging markets to buy pocket-friendly Chinese lights on the occasion of Diwali.
Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to buy ‘Made in India’ products this Diwali, Chinese products continue to dominate markets in the country.
The cost of China-made electric lights ranges from Rs.35 to Rs.400.
“We are buying Chinese lights because they are very cheap and good as well. We will use these lights till they work and then think of some other options,” said a customer, Prabhat Singh Chauhan.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers said the sale of Chinese lights was more this season as compared to last year.
“Chinese lights are very cheap. Everywhere LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode) are in demand. The lights this time are much cheaper than last year with a lot of varieties,” said s shopkeeper, Hassan Kamal Khan.
Diwali is celebrated with great fervor and gaiety all over India as it marks the return of Hindu god Lord Rama to Ayodhya after he defeated Ravana, the powerful demon king of Lanka.
Legend says millions of lamps were lit when Lord Rama returned after 14 years of exile in forests and after defeating Ravana.
Diwali is also celebrated in honour of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. It is believed that Lakshmi showers her blessings upon those homes that are clean and well lit. (ANI)
