Conductor dead, 17 injured as truck hits Kalinga University bus

New Delhi: A conductor of a private university bus was killed and at least 17 others, including seven students, were injured after a truck crashed into their bus in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur district on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred in the evening near Kotrabhata Chowk under Mandir Hasaud police station while the bus, of Kalinga University, was returning from the institute to drop the students and staff, a police official told PTI.

The bus with about 50 to 60 persons, including staff and students, was on the way to drop them after extra classes on Sunday at the university campus located in Naya Raipur area, around 27 KM away from here, he said.

When the bus was crossing Kotrabhata square, it was hit at the rear side end by the truck following which the vehicle overturned causing serious injury to occupants who were sitting behind, the official said.

Soon after getting information, a police team was rushed to the spot and the injured were shifted to a local hospital.
“The bus conductor identified as Umesh Chauhan (25) who had sustained critical injuries in the mishap succumbed while being taken to the hospital,” he said.

At least 17 others injured, including seven students and 10 university staff, were undergoing treatment at a government hospital here, he added.
The truck driver identified as Rohit Sahu has been arrested and his vehicle was seized, the official said.

However, the bus driver who was also injured in the mishap escaped from the spot.

A case has been registered in this connection, the official said adding further probe was on.
