Congress takes on Kejriwal, dubs salary hike ‘anti-democratic’

New Delhi: The Congress party on Friday took a strong exception to the approval of 400 percent pay hike for the Delhi MLAs, saying AAP supremo and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has acted against the promises made to the people.

Congress leader P. C. Chacko said that the people, who criticised the salary hike very badly in the past, were now repeating the very same thing.

” Kejriwal has acted against the promises he made to the people, this is also one typical example of it. I don’t think this would be appreciated by the people at all,” he added.

Another Congress leader P. L Punia also criticised the decision, saying it was totally uncalled for.

“The salary hike of 400 percent for the legislators of Delhi was totally uncalled for. I feel since most of the MLAs are from the AAP so the hike and allowances would be mostly beneficial to them,” Punia told ANI.

Congress leader J. P Agarwal on his part dubbed the move as ‘anti-democratic’ said those who were meant to serve the people are now acting like rulers.

“They had their own people in the committee. They should have consulted the people over the issue,” he said.

“Their action is totally anti-democratic and the Ministry of Home Affairs should not give its approval to the proposal and the LG should also intervene as it is totally wastage of money,” he added.

The Delhi Assembly had yesterday approved a 400 percent pay hike for MLAs and ministers, by passing the Members of the Legislative Assembly of the Government of NCT of Delhi (Salaries, Allowances, Pension) Amendment Bill 2015.

The House accepted the recommendations made by an independent committee of three experts. (ANI)
