DCW thwarts marriage of minor girl

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) today stopped the marriage of a 16-year-old girl in South Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area.

The commission had received an anonymous call on the 181 helpline, informing it of the marriage.

When the DCW intervened, the family of the minor girl, a Class XI student, claimed that it was her engagement and that she would be married off when she will turn 18.

“However, the neighbours told that the girl was to get married the next day,” a DCW official said.

Her family members claimed her mother was suffering from a kidney-related ailment and that she wanted to get the girl married as soon as possible.

The police are investigating the matter.
