Delhi: 43 McDonald’s outlets to shut down, 1700 to lose jobs

New Delhi: Seventeen Hundred employees reported to lose the job as Connaught Plaza Restaurants (CPRL), a local joint venture between Vikram Bakshi and McDonald’s took an ugly turn deciding to shut down 43 out of 55 restaurants in Delhi from Thursday.

“It’s unfortunate, but the operation of 43 restaurants operated by CPRL has been temporarily suspended,” said Vikram Bakshi, former managing director of CPRL, which operates 168 restaurants.

The move is a result of failure to renew eating house licenses by its North and East India licensee Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd (CPRL).

Since last two years, Vikram Bakshi and McDonald’s are at loggerheads over control of CPRL and arbitration proceeding is being pursued by the food chain at the London Court of International Arbitration, as per a report by DC.

“The Board of CPRL is working to obtain the required licenses. Pending this, CPRL is temporarily suspending the operations of the affected restaurants,” McDonald’s India Pvt Ltd (MIPL) spokesperson Barry Sum said.
