Delhi Mercedes hit-and-run case: Victim’s family pins hope on justice

New Delhi : Expressing disappointment with the deteriorating law and order situation, the aggrieved family of a business executive who was killed by a speeding Mercedes car in North Delhi’s posh Civil Lines area, continues to pin its hopes on justice.

“What the police is doing today.should have done that day within an hour. It’s okay that his father has been arrested, but I think we are still very far. There’s a long way to go.there will be a charge sheet. Our legal system is such that it will break you completely for justice,” the victim’s sister, Shilpa Mittal, told ANI.

“We have nothing to lose now. We should get justice. It is shameful that we have to fight for it. I think it’s a failure of the system. We get to know that there are many flaws in our system though this incident. I am not the first to fight against such injustice but I definitely want to be the last one in this process,” she added.

Shilpa expressed her disappointment over the fact that it is so easy for someone with money to get bail and walk free.

“This is a classic example where a father can say to his child ‘do whatever you want to do, don’t worry we will protect you as we have lot of money’. I can only expect that we will get justice. There are many loopholes.I think our fight will continue,” she said.

The incident took place at around 8.45 p.m. on April 4 when the victim, Sidharth Sharma, was crossing the road near Ludlow Castle School when a Mercedes hit him.

The Delhi Police yesterday slapped graver charges – culpable homicide – on the juvenile driver after learning that he was a repeat offender and arrested his father for abetting the crime.

Sharma, the marketing head of a multinational enterprise, was flung several feet into the air and landed at least 15 metres away, severely injured. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The police have impounded the car and tracked the owner, a businessman who resides in the Civil Lines area.

A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered at the Civil Lines police station.

The Class 12 student, who was allegedly driving the Mercedes, was arrested under laws for underage offenders but later released on bail.

The teen was on a night out with six friends. (ANI)
