Drinking blues: crane driver falls into nala, dies

Hyderabad: A drunken crane operator accidentally fell into a sewerage nala on Thursday night and died at Kukatpally. Kumaraiah, 40, S/O Niranjan from IDPL Huts in Kukatpally left his house and had gone to consume liquor at Prashant Nagar in Kukatpally. After purchasing liquor from a wine shop located near the Prashant Nagar bus terminal, he proceeded to consume liquor and sat close to the open sewerage nala.

The Times of India has quoted Kukatpally sub-inspector (SI) Majeed Ali as saying “After drinking, Kumaraiah went to attend to call of nature and accidentally slipped into the nala. Though the depth of water is only about three to four feet, Kumaraiah was too drunk to get up and drowned.”

When Kumaraiah didn’t return home, his family searched him in the vicinity but in vain. On Friday morning, locals spotted Kumaraiah’s body in the nala and alerted the family.

Kumaraiah’s body was shifted to hospital for post-mortem. The family of the victim and some locals staged a protest near the accident spot in Prashant Nagar, alleging that several people had lost their lives by accidentally falling into the nala due to the negligent attitude of the GHMC. They demanded fencing of nala to prevent people from falling into it.
