Farmer commits suicide in Karnataka

A 50-year-old farmer allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence in Kappagal village in Ballari district.

The farmer, who owned two acres of land, had borrowed Rs 1.50 lakh from private moneylenders and took the extreme step last night, police said on Tuesday.

Three farmers have committed suicide in the last one and half months in the district, police said.

Ballari Deputy Commissioner Sameer Shukla visited the house of the deceased’s family members and gave a cheque for Rs 25,000 as compensation.

A rise in incidents of suicide by farmers in last two months in the state has put the government under opposition fire.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had last week directed all district in-charge ministers to visit families of the deceased farmers and sought a report on compensation extended to them.
