Father, son thrashed by policemen in public view

Chennai: A video showing a man and his son being brutally thrashed by three policemen in full public view in Tiruvannamalai district has gone viral, sparking an outrage with DMK slamming the incident.

The video, aired by some Tamil news channels, purportedly showed the policemen assaulting and kicking Raja and his son Suriya, even as Raja’s wife is seen pleading with the cops to relent.

Raja told reporters that he and his wife yesterday had an argument at a public place and when the policemen enquired about it, he said it was a family matter and that they would settle among themselves.

However, the policemen suddenly started beating him and his son, Raja alleged.

The three policemen — Nammazhvar, Vijayakumar and Murugan — have since been transferred out of Chengam, where the incident took place, police said.

Rajan and Suriya being treated at a local hospital.

DMK President M Karunanidhi criticised the incident and urged police to be more “humane” towards public.

Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi founder T Velmurugan said that the assault on the persons went on for about 20 minutes despite their pleading with the policemen to spare them.

He sought suspension and departmental enquiry against the three policemen.
