Former Iranian president Rafsanjani dies at 82

Tehran [Iran]: Former Iranian president and chairman of the expediency council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Sunday died after suffering a heart attack. He was 82-year old.

According to Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Rafsanjani was taken to a state-run hospital after he suffered a heart attack earlier in the day.

He was an influential politician and writer who served as the fourth president of Iran from 1989 to 1997.

Rafsanjani was elected as the chairman of the Iranian parliament in 1980 and served until 1989. (ANI)
