Raju alias Roop Kishore, facing charges of gangrape, was being brought back to jail after a hearing in court on Saturday, when he ran out of the jeep raising an alarm and was found bleeding profusely by police, Badaun SP (City) Anil Kumar Yadav said.

While the accused claimed he had been attacked by fellow inmates, eyewitnesses said he had cut his chest himself, Yadav said.

“It appears that the accused had planned to escape from police custody by creating commotion by inflicting injury on himself,” he said.

The SP said a blade was recovered from his possession, adding he was rushed to the district hospital for treatment.
