Garbage workers continue strike in Telangana

Hyderabad: Residents Hyderabad were struggling with stench emanating from heaps of garbage dumped on streets as sanitation workers were on strike in Telangana.

Overflowing garbage bins were a common sight across the city as sanitation workers, under the aegis of Workers United Association at the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), showed no sign of calling off their strike.

Residents fear health hazards as indisposed garbage has piled up at roadsides from past few days.

“Unbearable foul smell is coming from the garbage that is left on the road, making it difficult for us to stay. The government should take immediate action against this and meet the demands of the sanitation workers,” said Rama Raju, a resident,

The protesting sanitation workers have been sitting on indefinite strike since Tuesday. They have been demanding regularisation of services of contract workers, pay hike and homes for employees.

“We have not got any salary hike as per our demand. So we are protesting for a hike in our salary,” said Darshat Kumar, a sanitation worker. (ANI)
