Gas leakage at Bhilai Steel Plant; six hospitalised

Raipur: A leakage of a hazardous gas was today reported at a section of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) in Chhattisgarh’s Durg district and six employees, including an officer, of the plant were hospitalised following its inhalation.

The affected employees were discharged after medical examination and are out of danger, officials said.

Six employees engaged in maintenance job at the Steel Melting Shop (SMD) 2 section of BSP were shifted to hospital for observation after detection of excess concentration of a hazardous gas at their workplace, a public relations officer of the plant told PTI.

“A team of six employees of power and electrical maintenance (PEM) department of the plant, including one officer and five non-executives were engaged in carrying out a planned maintenance job in Booster Fan in Convertor Shop of SMS2,” he said.

The maintenance was being carried out since May 30.

Another team from the mechanical section of convertor shop, including two officers and seven non-executives, were also working in the same section.

“As per the standard practice in BSP, particularly for any such job being carried out in polluted gas-prone areas, the employees were having portable gas monitors. After detection of the higher concentration of gas in the vicinity of the maintenance job area, all the employees came away from the spot and were subsequently taken to the Plant’s Main Medical Post (MMP),” the PRO said.

However, one of the affected employees was discharged from MMP itself while the remaining persons were taken to the Plant’s Jawahar Lal Nehru Hospital & Research Centre for further examination.

“After keeping them under observation, they were discharged. Condition of all of them is stable and they are out of danger. No one else has been affected in any way,” it added.
