GHMC begins removal of hyacinth from city lakes

Hyderabad: In order to minimise the mosquito menace, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has launched the operations of removing hyacinth and garbage waste from various lakes in its jurisdiction.

As per the directions of GHMC Commissioner Dr. B. Janardhan Reddy, the Deputy Commissioners have started removing hyacinth and garbage waste in the lakes at their jurisdiction which includes Malkajgiri, RC Puram, Serilingampally, Saroornagar, East, West, North and South Zones. The work is going on at war footing basis with the active involvement of Residential Welfare Associations and other Non Governmental Organisation. The removed hyacinth from various lakes is being dumped at Jawahar Nagar dumping yard.

In Alwal Chinarayuni Cheruvu, which has an area of 18.26 acres, hyacinth has been removed a few months back with the help of weed harvesting machine which turned the lake free from pollution.

The GHMC is also taking up anti-larval operations in almost all the lakes. (INN)
