New Delhi: Heaping praise on Rahul Dravid’s rich cricketing experience, former Australia captain Adam Gilchrist has stated that he wouldn’t be surprised if the batting legend takes up the role of India coach at some stage in his life as he has the potential to take the Asian giants to greater heights.
“I think Rahul’s cricketing experience both as a batsman and as a mentor is at par with anyone in the world. He had a very successful Under19 World Cup campaign. Any organisation he is involved with will be a successful one. We have seen that in Rajasthan (IPL). I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he ends up there at some stage. It is just a question of if and when the time is right for him,” Gilchrist told reporters here.
Dravid’s name has been doing the rounds for the job after Ravi Shastri’s contract as team director came to an end following the completion of the World Twenty20.
In response, the 43-year-old, who is currently coaching India-A and U-19 teams apart from being a ‘mentor’ with Indian Premier League franchise Delhi Daredevils, had said that he would look at taking up the role only if he has the ‘bandwidth’ for the job.
Gilchrist, who was widely regarded as one of the world’s most explosive batsman, however, denied harbouring any coaching ambitions.
“I don’t have any desires in getting into coach’s profession. This is not what I am looking to pursue,” he added. (ANI)
