Hakeem Abdul Waheed, 5 others from Telangana get Padma Shri

Hyderabad: Hakeem Mohammed Abdul Waheed of Govt. Nizamia Medical College, Hyderabad has been honoured with Padma Shri. Govt. of India has selected Dr. Mohammed Abdul Waheed for Padma Shri Award 2017 in recognition of his medical services. He is the alumnus of Osmania University.

Speaking to Siasat Hakeem Abdul Waheed said this award a boon for the Unani medicine and will be an inspiration to those interested to promote Unani medicine. He says the Padma Shri is a vindication of his three-decade-long research into vitiligo and he has been honoured by the government.

Dr. Abdul Waheed has treated more than two lakh vitiligo patients from India and abroad and has struggled to fight the social stigma.

Dr Waheed is a former head of the Central Research Institute of Unani Medicine in Hyderabad. He has co-ordinated multi-centric clinical trials of Unani medicines in diabetes, hypertension, vitiligo and hepatitis with seven different institutions.
He has published 26 research papers in national and international journals and presented more than 60 papers at various conferences.

The other 5 awardees who belong to Telangana are Daripalli Ramaiah for Social Work, Chintakindi Mallesham for Science & Engineering, Aekka Yadagiri Rao for Art-Sculpture, Chandrakant Pithawa for Science & Engineering, Mohan Reddy Venkatrama Bodanapun for Trade & Industry.
