HCU tense as VC Apparao back on duty

Hyderabad: Once again, the Hyderabad Central University (HCU) campus remained tense on Tuesday when vice-chancellor Prof. P. Apparao resumed duties after a two-month break following scholar Vemula Rohith’s suicide and subsequent unrest.
As the news spread, the irate students barged into the office of the Vice chancellor and ransacked the furniture. Raising slogans and blaming him for the suicide of Rohith Vemula, the students attacked his car. The attack occurred minutes before Appa Rao was to address media persons to announce that he has resumed duty.
It may be mentioned here that Apparao went on a long leave on January 24 after the students protested against the administration’s role behind the Vemula’s death and Prof. Vipin Srivatsav had taken over as in-charge vice chancellor. Students allege that the VC was responsible for the action against Rohith which ultimately forced him to commit suicide.
Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya, who recommended action against the scholar in a letter to the Human Resources Development ministry, vice chancellor Appa Rao and two others were booked for ‘abetting’ the suicide of Rohith. (NSS)
