Headley’s deposition: How Govt. proceeds now is important, says Congress

New Delhi: The Congress Party on Tuesday said David Coleman Headley’s deposition before the court is a testimony that once again establishes the deep involvement of the .state of Pakistan in perpetrating terrorism on Indian soil, and now, it is for the government to take it forward and isolate Islamabad to bring the real perpetrators of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks to justice.

“Materially, this has been established time and again that the Pakistani establishment – the deep state, the permanent state of Pakistan -deeply involved since 1980s in fermenting terrorism in India,” Congress spokesman Manish Tewari told ANI.

Stating that it is for the government to take it forward to bring the real perpetrators of 26/11 to justice, Tewari said, “With materially these revelations from Headley now taking a form of a testimony in the court of law, the important thing is what Prime Minister Narendra Modi is going to do about it? How is the Government of India, which has been vacillating and going all over the place with its Pakistan policies, now going to use this in order to isolate Pakistan?”

Deposing before a Mumbai court in connection with 26/11 Mumbai attacks that claimed 166 lives and left scores of people injured, Headley Headley, notably, named Major Ali and Major Iqbal of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) and Lashkar commander Sajid Mir as his contacts in Pakistan.

He admitted that he had met both Lashkar-e-Taiba(LeT) commander Hafeez Saeed and then operational commander Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi.

He told the court that Lashkar had planned to attack at the Taj Mahal Hotel in Mumbai.

Headley described Lashkar as “a militant organisation in Pakistan whose goal is to fight the Indian Army and assist the people of Kashmir.” Saeed and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi would give religious speeches and speak of ‘jihad,’ defined as “fight against enemies of Islam.” They, Headley said, treated India as their enemy.
