Health Minister pats OGH surgeons’ feat


Health Minister Dr C. Laxma Reddy today congratulated and appreciated Osmania General Hospitalsurgeons for successfully performing Pancreas and Kidney transplant in a patient on Wednesday. “This is another milestone crossed by the OGH Departments of Gastroenterology, Urology, Nephrology and Anaesthesia”, the minister said.

In a press release, the minister stated that for first time in the history of government hospitals in the country, Osmania General Hospital of Hyderabad, Telangana State has performed Pancreas and Kidney transplant in a patient Ganesh, 26, of Atmakur mandal of Nalgonda district, who was suffering from Type 1 Diabetes since 20 yers and was on dialysis since two yrs for renal failure.

The organs were retrieved from a brain dead patient Vijaykumar through Jeevandhan, who met with road accident. The surgery was performed for about 12 hours and would cost around Rs 30 to 40 lakhs in private sectors which was done successfully free of cost in Osmania general hospital. The surgery was performed by a team of doctors comprising Surgical Gastroenterologist Dr Madhusudhan, Urology :  Dr.Ramakrishna Prasad , Nephrology :  Dr Manisha , Anaesthesia   and Dr.Deepraj Singh. With the support of the administration, the Superintendent Dr.G.V.S.Murthy and also with cooperation from colleague doctors, nursing, paramedical and other staff of OGH, Hyderabad the surgery was performed successfully.


The patient’s blood sugars and kidney function have come to near normal. He is in ICU on Ventilator support and improving steadily. (NSS)
