Mumbai: A 49-year-old Hindu woman and a Muslim youth, posed as ‘mother and son’ were detained for duping several e-retail firms, like Snapdeal, by stealing valuable iPhones.
Using faked documents in the names of Anita and Siddharth Chabra, the mother-son duo had rented a flat in Kharghar’s Eden Garden Sector-5, as per India.com reports.
Anita Shirish Kulkarni (49), a Dombivli resident and Mobin Yusuf Mahafule (24), Naupada resident simply ordered iPhones with the cash on delivery option.
When the package was delivered to them, Anita engaged the delivery boy in a talk, whereas Mobin would take the parcel inside and exchanges it with a similar looking box, but containing a dummy piece and hand it back to the delivery boy claiming they were defective model.
Navi Mumbai deputy commissioner of Police (crime) Dilip Sawant told indiatimes, “After Snapdeal lodged a complaint against the ‘mother-son’ duo, crime branch sleuths raided their Kharghar flat and seized 17 iPhones worth a total Rs 8.16 lakh. We have urged other e-tailers to come forward and register complaints against them.”
Several similar cheating cases have been booked against them in Ahmedabad, Pune, Thane and where they used the same modus operandi.
